Koenraad, Jan, Stefaan De Wolf is my full name. I first saw the light of day on October 3rd 1956. As a second child of seven, I grew up in the small village of Zottegem in East-Flanders.
After finishing high school, where I studied Latin and Greek, I went on to read both history and art history at Leuven University. Even though it seems rather effortless, I had to work hard for it. And I never stopped being a hard worker, all the while developing a family trait: my stubbornness. Having a great sense of justice and fairness, I think and act straightforwardly all the time. That approach has led to some conflicts, but I always stood firm.
I married the love of my life, Rita De Roover, in 1988. We had three children: Jolien (°1989), Joris (°1991) and Maarten (°1993), who are all grown up by now. I am very proud of them.
Being a descendant from politicians, I joined local politics myself in the 1980s. My grandfather was mayor and my father member of the local council. I myself first became youth chairman and later on party chairman of what was then still called CVP (Christian Democratic Party). In 1988, however, I resigned from politics, since it was no longer in line with my conscience.
For over thirty years, I have been (first full-time, later part-time) professionally engaged in employment and social economy. I started at the ministry of Employment and Labor and went on to work for the Flemish Community. From 2000 until 2012 I worked as a professional journalist for Tertio, a Flemish newsmagazine and since 2013 I have been working as the personal assistant of David Larmuseau, the chairman of the Public Centre for Social Welfare in Geraardsbergen.
I only truly relax while watching soccer. Having a great liking for English football, I have also been a regular supporter of RWDM (a club from Brussels) since the 1970s. Apart from soccer, I am also an avid hiker. Usually, I go for a one hour hike every day. Starting in the 1995 holidays, my family and I have been hiking one of the seven routes of the ‘camino’ to the Spanish pilgrimage site Santiago de Compostela every other year. Spain has gained a special place in my heart… Besides, I join the long-distance march of 100 kilometers in Bornem (Dodentocht) every year.
Essential to my life is my benign addiction to writing. My favorite subjects are history, art and architecture. Only recently, I discovered my maternal grandfather was a writer too. He wrote several (unpublished) books and apparently passed his writing bug on to me. In 1980 I published my first article and I started my own column in the local weekly De Beiaard. Two years later, my very first book was printed, only to be the first of many. By now, I’ve written about 40 different titles. Add the 20 scientific articles and contributions to exhibition catalogs from my hand to those titles and we will end up with almost 7,000 pages.
Expanding my perspective from my hometown to the larger region, during the last for years of the previous century I have depicted 1,000 years of South-East-Flemish architectural history in 5 volumes. Starting with Romanesque architecture, I completed my journey with modernism. The volumes include some spectacular discoveries. Moreover, together with Ignace De Temmerman, I rewrote the histories of the castles of Leeuwergem and Lilare.
During my first job with Jan Hoet in the museum SMAK in Ghent, my love for contemporary art blossomed. After I finished a book on a group of artists around Roger Raveel (Kunst in de fabriek. De Nieuwe Visie van Beervelde tot Dulcia (1991)), I also wrote the monograph of artist Antoon De Clerck (1993). The latter has been published in Dutch and English.
The past two decades I’ve been focusing on contemporary religious art. Since 1995 I have been curating the annual exhibition of contemporary religious art Alnetum in Elst – Brakel. In cooperation with Jo Cornille of the publishing company Halewijn, I got the opportunity to publish a series of books about the artist-priests Georges Herregods (2002) and Louis Van Overloop (2004). What is more, I wrote about the art center Pro Arte Christiana and its spiritual fathers, the artists Geroen De Bruycker en Rik Van Schil in Dutch (2007) and in 2006 De zeven werken van barmhartigheid en het religieus geïnspireerd humanisme van Pat De Vylder, was also published in Dutch. Regarding the German artist Johannes Wickert, I published his monography and I wrote Zoeken naar de essentie van het christendom (in Dutch). Lastly, after several years of research, the book Nieuwe lente voor religieuze kunst. Opmars van hedendaagse kunst in Belgische liturgische ruimten (2000-2010) was printed in Dutch in 2011.
From 2008-2010 my writing activities gained momentum. First and foremost, I wrote an international, historical piece Dissident for Life. Alexander Ogorodnikov and the Struggle for Religious Freedom in Russia which was published both in Belgium and in the United States. By coincidence – on my way to a book presentation in Amsterdam – I read an article on the Vietnamese dissident Nguyen Van Ly, which resulted in a new passion: Vietnam. The country had been fascinating me since I was a youngster because of the cruel war at the time. In 2013, I visited the country with my wife and spoke with several dissidents. One of them was Hien, the wife of dissident Le Quoc Quan, who was still imprisoned at that time.
By then, I had retrained myself to become a historical fiction writer. It was my goal to reach a larger audience via this more popular genre. My first novel, Blauwe ogen, tells the story of Rita Winterstein, the last survivor of the Nazi experiments. My novella, Het Project Utopia, was published in Dutch and in German. Currently, I am negotiating a French publication of my novel on Alexander Ogorodnikov (L’enfer de Perm vaincu).
In three novels I pay attention to the fate of important dissidents in Viet-Nam and Cuba. In the summer of 2016 my novel All men become brothers is published in the US. The book covers the life and times of Father Nguyen Van Ly, a catholic priest. The same year, a second book is also published in the US: The Lotus Revolution tells the story of a human rights activist, M. Le Quoc Quan. In 2017 the historical novel The white revolution focuses on recent cuban history and includes also a plan for the future of that country.
Only recently, I’ve started writing screenplays. My dream of ever making a film out of one of my books might one day come true…
By writing about dissidents, I’ve become one myself. Ever since I left politics, I’ve felt dissatisfied with how things are in our society. In 2010 I published Utopia Revisited. Nieuw maatschappijmodel brengt mensen samen in plaats van ze te verdelen. (New society model brings people together instead of deviding them). This is how I accidentally ended up in philosophical waters. A year later I finished the manifesto 10 woorden. Nieuw mensbeeld voor de 21ste eeuw (Ten words. New image of men for the 21th century).
My project Holocaust Revisited aims at restraining growing xenophobia and extreme rightwing ideology in Europe by obliging minors to visit the concentrations camps of WWII. With the blueprint of an Ideeënbank (Bank for ideas) global issues can be dealt with (www.wikideai.org).
This theoretical background culminates in 2016 in a new philosophical model: The Pendulating Model. A key for a kinder, gentler society (Het Pendelmodel. Sleutel voor een warmere samenleving). The drafting of a new manifesto follows the next year and is called the Oasisplan (nov. 2017). It works out an alternative for the detrimental influence of interest groups and lobbies in our society. In terms of content this plan builds on the model of society Utopia revisited (2010).
From July 2017 I am working at the historic site of Hunnegem. With David Larmuseau a book is published in January 2018: Hunnegem, the beating heart of Geeraardsbergen ( Hunnegem, het kloppende hart van Geraardsbergen). The book reveals the formerly nearly unknown history of that ancient district of the city of Geraardsbergen (Flanders) Later that year I become curator of the newly created museum HUGE – Museum Hunnegem Geraardsbergen. The museum occupies the former romanesque church dating from the 11th Century and the adjacent cloisters of the benedictine sisters (19th C.) The museum tells the history of Hunnegem, cradle of the city of Geraardsbergen, from prehistoric times onwards.
A second, brand new museum is located on the first floor of the former convent of the Sisters Benedictines (17th century) : the MAVF – Museum en Archief van de Vlaamse Film. The first wing of the Flemish film museum brings this rich history to life again from the first Flemish film (1920) until the 1960s. The second and third wing, which shall be accomplished the next years, will tell the history of the past half a century. One can find more information on the website www.museahunnegem.be.
My philosophical writing have sharpened my opinions. More than ever before, I’m all for tradition. Intuitively, I’ve had a soft spot for religion my whole life. Unsurprisingly, religion has become a leitmotiv throughout my oeuvre. Only with the publication of Het Pendelmodel it became clear to me how vital religion is in every society, in all eras, in all cultures. However, I’m more of a thinker than a doer. Christian religion and culture have always been a part of my upbringing and are inextricably bound up with my roots. Still I have distanced myself from the institute of the church due to the recent pedophile scandal.
I look upon the loss of the Artes Liberales (Liberal Arts) – with Latin as its first victim - with sorrow. For almost 2,000 years, these Liberal Arts have been the groundwork of our education and they’ve formed present day Western society. I find it disconcerting how society is thoughtlessly throwing them away ‘in the name of progress’. The Dutch theologian and politician Gerard van der Leeuw once said: “Tradition is the solidified experience of the generations”. Unfortunately, we are throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Therefore, as a traditionalist on the terrain of moral and cultural values, I am rather conservative.
